About us

We are the Futureproof Coffee Collective We believe in: - a true price for coffee - the need for collaboration - radical transparency as a condition - getting started right away! This is what’s happening: - We create a benchmark for the true costs of coffee production. - We develop one method for calculation, suitable for all companies, especially the smaller ones. - We map out the true costs of our own coffee and compare this to the benchmark. - We use smart interventions to reduce costs for coffee production. And measure the effects. - We will cover the remaining true costs of coffee production by paying the true price. All coffee lovers and professionals dedicated to their product can secure a sustainable future for coffee. Get involved! Follow this page to stay updated.

Great news from Uganda! 📌We can't wait to welcome the famous Mt. Elgon Stratoberry and Lavacherry, soon in March into our warehouse in EU. Last year, we missed importing our favorite Mt Elgon Arabica from Norman Mukuru (Sironko Coffee Yard) due to his exporter's bankruptcy, which left Norman under financial strain and led to the liquidation of our contracted inventory just before shipping. Fortunately, this year, we've secured a new export partner, ensuring production continues. Both of these long-awaited coffees pack a punch. Stratoberry (1-day anaerobic Natural) boasts floral and blueberry notes, while its sister Lavacherry (3-day anaerobic) offers a more rum raisin, wine-like taste. We still have some bags left. 📌 While we ensure our partnership with Norman, The Coffee Quest is fully engaged in our ongoing impact program with Canephora producers with UCFA, Brand Farm and the Future Proof Coffee Collective. Alex Schumann, our Impact Nomad, will visit Canephora producers of our pioneer project Future Proof Coffee Uganda, to continue our efforts in promoting sustainable production. Michiel Lampers, our co-founder, will also return in May to focus on Arabica and Canephora. Wakuli goes Utrecht! After 5 successful store openings in our hometown Amsterdam it’s time to move horizons… So how to decide where to go next? For us Utrecht was the obvious choice: an amazing vibrant city with stylish, progressive people and close enough to Amsterdam to cover construction- and store management with our current team. Another very important motivation: Utrecht is already our biggest online fan, it’s the city where we have the most subscription customers (per capita) in the Netherlands. We can’t wait to open the doors for all Utrechters at the beginning of April! Looking to become our first Utrecht (lead-) barista? WAKULI'S 2023 IMPACT REPORT IS OUT NOW It covers -among a lot of other things- our impact focused pricing strategy, leading to a larger positive effect for farmers now that the market prices for arabica have gone down again. That's because our prices to farmers have not! The report also covers our commitment to regenerative coffee production. After years of building solid partnerships and focussing on quality, last year we really started the work on climate resilience and ecology. And we won't stop until all of our coffee is regenerative! Check out what that means and more about our 2023 results in our online magazine or pick up a copy in one of our stores! #specialtycoffee #sustainablecoffee #regenerativecoffee #regenerativeagriculture https://lnkd.in/eQQpETib

How long will our #coffee carry the bitter taste of #slavery? ☕ Despite repeated promises from coffee multinationals to do better, their supply chains are still riddled with cases of modern slavery. This dark reality is particularly evident in Brazil, the world’s leading coffee producer. Brazil’s coffee workers are subject to forced labour, debt bondage, abysmal working conditions, and other forms of exploitation. Voluntary due diligence and certification schemes, which involve audits, monitoring, and certification of suppliers, are intended to ensure that labour standards are upheld throughout the supply chain. But this is a clear example of their failure. Read the new report 'Bitter Brew' by SOMO and Conectas Direitos Humanos 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUieE7CD

What's cooking? We just got some amazing pictures from our coffee producing partners in Zombo, Uganda (one of the coffees in our Christmas blend!). As you might have seen in earlier posts, Wakuli works closely with Zombo Coffee Partners in a three year program through the Futureproof Coffee Collective with 50 lead farmers (and a group of 300 farmers in a second phase) to improve livelihoods and gender balance through a regenerative agriculture approach. For Wakuli "Reg Ag" means that farmers become more independent across the board: from climate change, weather events, from big chemical fertiliser companies and big bad coffee companies. So unlocking present knowledge about soil and crop management and adding to that knowledge through experts and peer to peer learning is time and resources well spent, we think. The picture below captures all of this. Clearly a hands on, do-it-yourself moment with the whole crew cooking up some amazing organic liquid fertiliser and compost for use on their own farm. And the cool thing is that most of the ingredients are readily available and cost next to nothing. The coming year will prove if application leads to more and better yields. We are convinced it will. #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativecoffee #fertilizerindustry Maarten van Keulen Roxana de Raad Lotje Kaak Alex Schumann Jim Tersteeg aggrey chombe Rubén B.

🌍✨ Exciting news from the coffee realm! Today, we're unveiling the journey of Fairtrade Original’s Ugandan coffee beans through our traceability platform, #Trace. Transparency and traceability are key to a sustainable coffee chain, and we're proud of this next step in our mission for fair coffee trade. Our director Sander de Jong emphasises, "With Trace, we bring together traceability, transparency, and proof. Now, you get to discover if Fairtrade Original truly delivers on their promises in Uganda!" One specific commitment we share today is the payment of a Living Income Reference Price (LIRP) to coffee farmers, contributing to a living income. On Trace, you can now find digital receipts as evidence of these payments, allowing you to verify that promises are being fulfilled. But Fairtrade Original’s efforts go beyond financial support. They're implementing projects supporting farmers with less land or older coffee plants. Think sustainable agriculture training and setting up credit funds for energy-efficient stoves, reducing deforestation. You can also track these projects and their progress on Trace! Coffee sourcing manager, Lotje Kaak, shares her pride: "Trace has given us crucial insights into how the price flows at the farmer level, and we've been able to make immediate improvements." Explore the journey yourself 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/ehumiKHV. This initiative is part of the 5-year RECLAIM Sustainability! programme, carried out by Fairfood in collaboration with Solidaridad Network, Trust Africa, and Business Watch Indonesia. Special thanks to Solidaridad East and Central Africa for making this project happen with us: let's work together towards a fair and sustainable future for coffee! ☕️💚🌏 #SustainableCoffee #Traceability #FairTrade #Fairfood #RECLAIMSustainability

This scientific paper -in Dutch and English- about the (lack of) effect of certification of products like coffee from Peru supports our belief that certification is not the answer to the challenges facing the coffee industry and does not help farmers improve their livelihoods like it promises. Eva Boonaert and Miet Martens of the KU Leuven conclude that farmers in Peru (the country with highest percentage of certified coffee) are not benefitting from certification at all. There is a lack of demand for coffee with a label and even if a higher price is received it does not cover the costs for getting certified. We are often asked: "Why don't you source certified coffee?" and it always requires some explaining from our end. You can read more on it in our impact report and in an earlier post on our #Bcorp certification. The bottom line: we strongly believe in a new way of doing business through quality improvement & development of entrepreneurship, paying a damn good price and most of all working together as partners. This requires attention, dedication, full traceability and transparency. Something that almost no company can provide (some exceptions like Wakuli below). So they rely on labels to convince their audience of their good intentions. Our advice to all coffee lovers with strong convictions: Don't lean back and feel good just because your coffee has a label. Go online, check out where your coffee is from and ask the brand people some hard questions through customer service channels.
